EU PVSEC 2025: Why do PV plants perform lower than expected?

Spain, Bilbao // On site
23 September 2025

PV plant managers and operators face a range of challenges, including subpar energy production, ineffective solar tracker algorithms, undetected performance losses, overwhelming data and alarms, while declining electricity prices are putting downward pressure on O&M costs. To address these problems, PVOP is developing a suite of eight technical solutions by leveraging advanced artificial intelligence and big data.

PVOP is hosting a parallel event at EU PVSEC, in which project experts will share insights into current challenges facing the solar power industry and explore two key problem-solving approaches:

  • Estimating losses using backtracking algorithms in undulating terrain.
  • Analysing the loss chain and identifying deviations from initial expectations.

The event will count on the participation of five of our experts to lead the session.

  • Luis Narvarte, professor at the Department of Telematics and Electronics Engineering at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) and PVOP project coordinator.
  • Eduardo Lorenzo Pigueiras, professor at the Department of Physical Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics at the UPM and member of the Solar Energy Institute (IES).
  • Javier Ledesma, professor at the Department of Telematics and Electronics Engineering at the UPM and member of the IES.
  • Ana Belén Cristóbal López, professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics to Information and Communication Technologies at the UPM and member of the IES.
  • Rodrigo Moretón Villagrá, founding partner and CEO of Qualifying PhotoVoltaics.
